Sushi 101

As my mom is quick to remind me, there was a time as I child when I wouldn't even eat peppers. Well, I'm happy to say that phase was brief, and here I am today making attempting to make sushi.

The beginner class started with hot saki and basic instruction, and ended with each of us making two rolls of our own.

Here's the second of my two... a spicy vegetarian roll

Outside: rice with togarashi and sesame seeds
Inside: sriracha, asparagus, red pepper, green onion, and mushrooms

I have a question: Is the restaurant name a take off on "sock it to me"...or is that just me revealing my age? mom

Oh MY GOSH - I'm so jealous! One, because Danny and I LOVED Sakitumi (which I always thought was a take off of Sock It To Me!), but TWO because I've always wanted to make homemade sushi. We're going to attempt this for Danny's birthday next week, although I doubt the results will be so beautiful as yours. Any hints I should know about before I buy my little bamboo mats? :-)

A few hint...
(1) keep ice water on hand for working with the sticky rice
(2) wrap your bamboo mat in saran wrap to keep the roll from sticking and ease rolling
(3) dip everything in eel sauce
(4) have sushi masters prepare your rice
(5) have fun
(6) don't stick to a recipe, make the rolls your want to make

(Happy Birthday Danny!)
